Janie Frazer’s Organic Lifestyle
Ron and Janie Frazer own Frazer Farms .The pair has a 26 acre farm where they raise Belted Galloway cattle, organic chickens, and organic hay.
Belted Galloway cattle originally come from Scotland. This breed is also known as the Oreo cookie cow, they have a dark head and tail with a white belly band. The cattle have been on a watch list because there were so few of them. The breed has been moved to recovering status by the American Live Stock Breeds Conservancy.
There are numerous regulations to be adhered to in order to be a certified organic product. The fence posts must be metal, because wooden posts have chemicals that leech into the soil. Soil and water testing is accomplished yearly to verify organic restrictions are being met. Additionally Janie must keep notes on when feed bags are open or when the cattle is moved to different pastures.
All of these procedures are intensive but Janie feels good about her work. She says that the farm is not yet seen a profit. However knowing what the cows and chickens are eating makes her feel good, that she and her husband are eating healthy. They sell thier eggs locally, the customers pay $5 per dozen of organic eggs.
Janie really enjoys her farm, she spends time walking in the pastures with her herd. She even has special names for every member of the herd. Janie’s wishes for a better life have been realized.
