Is Organic Certification Necessary?
The first question that comes to our mind while buying organic products is that whether it is a genuine organic product or fake. To ensure that we get genuine organic products, governments of various countries have started certifying organic products. For organic certification, certain organizations have been given responsibility to take care of the entire certifying process.
So when you buy a product that has organic certification, you can be assured that you are getting natural product, which has been produced and processed using natural materials and processes. The requirements and process of organic certification varies from country to country.
Many producers are now converting to organic farming. This is because the demand for organic products has increased manifold in the past few years. Once the producer switches to organic farming it takes a few years for the land and produce to become entirely organic. Most producers now want their crop and products to be certified as it helps them to get shelf space easily for their products at various supermarkets. Also they can command a good price for their products.
Some of the basic requirements for producers to get organic certification are as follows:
- Organic farming should be practiced on the farmland for at least 3 years. This is because it takes some time for farmland to overcome the ill effects of chemicals.
- No chemical or man-made substances should be used while growing or processing organic produce. This includes pesticides, fertilizers, seeds etc.
- The producer should keep a record of all the processes and materials that are used while producing and processing the products.
The producers who go for organic certification have to follow stringent methods of organic farming. Once they apply to the authorized body for organic certification, there are regular inspections conducted by the concerned department to ensure that the producer uses all organic materials and methods. The producers have to maintain proper records of all the farm-related activities. They also have to keep marketing and sales record. The organic produce should also be handled in an organic way.
Organic certification is not just meant for farmers. It is also meant for manufacturers of packaged organic foods, producers of dairy products and other organic product producers and manufacturers. So the next time you buy organic products, do not forget to check for organic certification.
