Honey Is Commonly Mislabeled As Organic Food Despite Lack Of Industry Standards

Honey is often labeled as an organic food to attract the attention of those consumers pursuing the benefits of a healthy organic lifestyle.  But experts agree that there’s no way to determine that the honey is organic in nature and that any such claims are merely attempts to sell more product to the unaware.

Organic labeling implies that no pesticides or chemical fertilizers are present in a food, but the very nature of honey production works against such surety.  Bees are essentially foragers who wander a wide area in their search for nectar. Bee keepers have no idea where the bees go when collecting this nectar since they regularly travel up to several miles away from the hives in all directions.  Bees are capable of picking up any chemicals they’re exposed to while foraging and bring it back to the hive where it contaminates the honey.

For this reason no organic standard exists for honey produced in the United States.  Furthermore because it’s very difficult to screen honey for contaminants and extra ingredients there are many brands on the market that contain sugar or other types of sweeteners or artificial additives. Consumers need to be very careful to avoid misleading claims when choosing honey for the dinner table.
